About Wine Region Alicante

Centred around the lively port city of Alicante, the Alicante Denominación de Origen (DO) is divided into two contrasting areas along Spain’s Costa Blanca. The arid valley of the Rio Vinalopó provides the perfect conditions for growing Monastrell grapes while Moscatel flourishes in the warm, humid climate of La Marina.

Things to do in Wine Region Alicante

Pioneering bodegas, legendary cycling mountains and centuries-old castles - the Alicante wine region is one of Valencia’s most enticing destinations.

Sightsee in Alicante. Spend an afternoon strolling the narrow streets of Alicante’s Barrio de la Santa Cruz, which is clustered with colourful houses and balconies overflowing with flowers. An elevator leads to the hilltop Castillo de Santa Barbara, a medieval fortress boasting panoramic views across the Costa Blanca and the mountainous countryside.

Tour the Alicante Wine Route. Cellar door hop between the bodegas that dot the Vinalopo and La Marina wine-growing regions to sample sweet Moscatel Alicante and the flagship Vino “Fondillon”. Many of the wineries have on-site restaurants serving traditional cuisine, with highlights including gazpacho manchego and snails grilled over vine shoots.

Visit the Castillo de Petrer. Perched atop a hill overlooking Petrer is this 12th-century fortress, which was built by the Moors before the town became part of the Kingdom of Valencia. Tour the Great Hall, the dungeon and the free-standing tower, then discover the unique cave houses chiselled into the encircling wall.

Cycle the Xorret Del Cati. One of the most famous cycling climbs in the region is the Xorret Del Cati, a 1,097-metre-high mountain towering north-west of Alicante. Beginning near Castalla, the trail ascends along steep gradients sometimes in excess of 20%, making it a challenge for experienced climbers.
